Frequently Asked Questions

Am I able to consult with you remotely?

Absolutely! Remote consulting via my forum, Zoom, email, and phone is the primary method I use to work with coffee roasters these days. If you’re interested in getting advice, working through a problem, or refining your roasts, there are numerous ways we can work together.

Do you work with coffee roasters in person?

Though I am currently not traveling for consultations, you’re welcome to travel to my training facility so we can work together. I work with coffee roasters in person at my Roasting Lab Space in Rainier, OR. To schedule an in-person class with me, please email rob@hoos.coffee.

Where can I purchase the e-book versions of your publications?

Excellent question! All of my e-books have been moved under the same roof, making it even easier to buy one or get a discount on a bundle. To get the e-book versions, go to https://ebooks.hoos.coffee/

I want to get physical copies of your books, but I don’t know where to look…

While I do work with a handful of resellers around the world, the best centralized space for people to purchase my books is from the printing company I use, Lulu.com. They work with a network of printers worldwide to help minimize the cost of shipping… To see the physical book options, please visit https://www.lulu.com/spotlight/robhoos

Why are you so big on people joining the mentorship group and Roasting Lab Community?

In the past, most of my work with clients has been a la carte — they reach out when a problem gets big enough to need fixing, or they take a class and we may never cross paths again. But learning a craft like coffee roasting works best with ongoing support, conversation, and shared experience.

That’s why I created the Roasting Lab Community: a space that blends mentorship and community, where you can keep growing instead of starting over each time. Because it’s online and most sessions are recorded, you can learn at your own pace while still staying connected to others on the same path.

What kinds of coffee roasters do you work with?

I work with everyone from small-batch home roasters to established commercial operations. Whether you’re roasting on an IKAWA, a small drum roaster, a Loring, or a 2-bag Probat, I can help you understand your machine, develop your profiles, and build confidence in controlling your flavor outcomes. I’ve worked with a wide variety of types, manufacturers, and sizes of coffee roasting equipment.

Can you help me design or set up a roasting space?

Yes! I’ve helped dozens of roasteries design functional, efficient, and compliant roasting spaces. We can work through layout, workflow, ventilation, and even sourcing equipment—whether you’re setting up your first shop or refining an existing one.

Do you help with green coffee buying or selection?

Absolutely. I can help you identify the right coffees for your flavor goals, roasting approach, and price point. Together we can analyze samples, evaluate fit for dark or light roasting, and discuss how cultivar, processing, and origin affect your outcomes.

How much does it cost?

All of my ready-made consulting options on Calendly are priced as is. Books and mentorship groups are also priced as is. Special consultations and in-person classes are generally priced at $100-$200/hr, depending on what the consultation covers.
